Dieser Laden war für mich so etwas wie eine Offenbarung, weil ich zuvor nie etwas Vergleichbares gesehen hatte: Vor 13 Jahren eröffnete der Antwerpener Designer Walter Van Beirendonck seinen legendären Concept Store W.A.L.T.E.R.. Und jetzt erfahre ich heute, dass der Laden schließen wird. Tragisch! Als Begründung steht in der Pressemitteilung: "The reason for this decision is a dispute with the owner of the premises who wished to increase the rent by 250 percent." Das müssen wir so stehen lassen und können es nicht kommentieren. Van Beirendonck gibt zu Protokoll: "Under these conditions it is no longer possible to work at the current premises in a profitable manner. Regrettable as this may be, it allows me to invest more time and energy in my own collection, which was recently applauded by the international press and buyers during fashion week in Paris. Besides, my function as creative director of the Fashion Department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, there are a number of new challenges ahead of me. Finally, I am not ruling out the creation of a new store concept linked to my collection." Zuletzt führte Van Beirendonck Marken wie Dirk Van Saene, Bernhard Willhelm, Christian Wijnants, Syngman Cucala, Mikio Sakabe, Comme des Garçons Play und natürlich seine eigen Kollektion. Und jetzt geht ein bisschen so etwas wie eine Einzelhandels-Ära zuende. Ich weiß bisher nicht, wann genau der Laden schließt: also, wer es schafft, vorher noch mal einen Besuch in Antwerpen abstatten.
